At some point in their life, hopefully everyone strives to be the best in their chosen profession. Most people think that being the best requires more intelligence, more training, and more experience. In reality, in business or even in sports, the evidence is conclusive that it is as much about how you think, as what you do.

Interesting, Martin, and generally true, except in the case of classical music. In a 2 or 3 hour PBS documentary Julliard realized long ago that for music (not the visual arts, dance, prose/poetry, or acting) that if you didn't get into Julliard by age 10 you stood no chance of making it there - you were already hopelessly behind. I know of a few who made it as major label recording artists (back when they controlled all access) and had life-long careers (Christopher Parkening & Paul O'Dette to name 2), but they didn't run the gauntlet at Julliard. They each started around age 14 (guitar & lute, respectively), and within 2 years had far surpassed the level of accomplishment of averagely-gifted people who may have been at it from age 10 to age 35. Sometimes being gifted IS necessary, though they certainly worked very hard on top of it to achieve greatness. No one gets to the top w/o working very hard.
