Handling security for an event is one of the most challenging tasks any organiser must face.

Keeping the people in the venue safe from mishaps and keeping undesirable elements out of the event are difficult and sometimes dangerous jobs which must be undertaken with complete professionalism.

In some states, California being one of them, it is illegal to contract "friends and family" to provide security services, even if they are registered security guards.

All security services MUST be contracted through a security company, unless your company is a registered Proprietary Private Security Employer, in which case you can hire your own security guards or Proprietary Private Security Officers. They can only work at your specific place of business (ie, you can't take them on the road to another venue).

Repercussions may range from Criminal to Civil suits, as well as fines levied by the Department of Consumer Affairs to the tune of several thousands of dollars/incident (such as each guard)

Ref: B&P Code

7582. No person shall engage in a business regulated by this

chapter; act or assume to act as, or represent himself or herself to

be, a licensee unless he or she is licensed under this chapter; and

no person shall falsely represent that he or she is employed by a

licensee.

The first question that always pops inside my mind whenever I go to an event is, "is it safe to attend there?"
