Measuring the health of a business is more than just about financial metrics. Business health measurement should include operational and satisfaction (customer and employee) metrics. By measuring the business at all of these levels, the business can only become healthier.

Barney, Not so long ago my own business was in a bad place mainly because we had a lot of construction clients and the industry had just fallen apart. This year sales have come back stronger than ever, here's how:

a) I re-positioned who I am professionally and the services I offer.

b) My biz model had been based on short-term engagements, I sought out companies (many start-ups) that I could grow with and have much longer-term engagements with.

c) When the recession hit, I initially fell into the trap of chasing business, while I secured clients this way, the quality of these relationships was often poor. Now, mainly because I have been able to substantially build my personal brand, clients seek me out and these are the right types of people and businesses for me to work with. I qualify hard and early only taking on a percentage of those that want to do businesses.

Thanks for sharing, Niall
