I have some unfortunate news for you small business owners out there. Actually, it’s less bad news than a reality check. There’s no getting around the fact that there are a lot of consumers out there who feel more comfortable giving their business to a larger, more established company as opposed to a smaller mom and pop store.

Great tips, I am very careful about design though. As a small business owner, I find a lot of designers tend to "pull something" out of a bag, and can lose the sense of the person/business. It's important to feel I own the design, and that it is representing my business, my personality, my character, and is not just full of typical clichés and stock images. And Daniel makes valid points about design also, re images, logo etc.
Own domain is IMPERATIVE, as is the ability to move hosting etc. As a consumer, a freemail account is a NO-NO - I walk away and look elsewhere (or click elsewhere)
Social interaction helps small business. I will look for recommendations, or interact with a service before I use it as a consumer. I find twitter and others great for this.
