In order to innovate we have to generate new connections between ideas. We can’t do this if all of our routines only expose us to viewpoints that are very similar to our own.

Maybe you're underestimating your friends - especially FB "friends" you don't actually know personally. If I understood you correctly, you're saying that you already know everything/anything these people might say or think - that you can predict their thoughts, feelings, and reactions to the extent that they don't offer anything exciting - or even of value. That would constitute under-estimation in my book. My FB "friends" constantly come up with stuff I'd never think of.
