Sports enthusiasts are often avid collectors of memorabilia, and some of the most highly valued sports collectibles are the uniforms and equipment worn or used by athletes in actual games. At sports collectibles shows and special fan events, fans can even get these items signed by the athletes who wore them, which adds significantly to their value. Imagine the value of the helmet worn by Eli Manning in the Super Bowl, signed by the New York Giants quarterback himself! But how do you — and appraisers or subsequent buyers — know that a helmet with Manning's purported autograph is authentic? Until recently, the purchaser of a signed collectible likely would have received a paper certificate of authenticity attesting to the validity of the item. But with such certificates, there was no way to definitively link them to specific merchandise items.
