"Obviously any comment on the Google method of ranking is part theory and part speculation but usually with my websites I aim for a mix of links to the home page and deep links. I think if I was a search engine and I looked at a website and all of the links pointed to the home page I might find this a bit unusual and I would probably devalue some of these links. If I can get a 60:40 split or thereabouts of links to the home page and deep links then I find that works quite well with my search rankings."« previous1 next »

"Hi Matt. Great article and interesting numbers. Puts a whole new spin on search engine marketing for small and medium businesses. Could be that is just as much about promoting your business to the top of the search rankings as it is about keeping a negative review or comment posted on a forum or business directory off the top of the rankings. Couldn't be anything much worse for a business than having a negative comment appear at or close to the top of the search rankings for your business name or brand. What an online business killer that could prove to be."
