If your employees are like most these days, even when they go on vacation, they’re still connected with the office through their email, voice mail and devices.

True. I feel like employees shouldn't have to worry about their work when they are on vacation. After all, they're on vacation to relax and not to check on emails and their phones in every 15 minutes. Maybe at least, at the end of the day, they could catch up on their work a little bit but I do believe vacation should be relaxation only.

Hi Maria and Rieva,

Reading this post gave me mixed feelings. First, I don't think any business should expect its employees to work at all during their vacation. It defeats the purpose of vacation, which is to rest from work. But as your article states, employees themselves get stressed out if they're not able to connect. This is absolutely true. So as long as employees can connect on their own terms during vacation time, I think it's okay. And by "their own terms" I don't mean by using just any public connection. They should still use the VPN or whatever's been approved by the company. But the company should make sure there are no expectations of the employee during this time. As small business people, it's really hard to disconnect from your business and your work, but the thing that makes it a business and not a hobby or freelance job is that your critical work is handled by competent employees you've hired...the business exists as a separate entity from you. You should be able to take a break without it all falling apart.

Thanks for this great post, just in time for summer, and thanks for contributing to the BizSugar community!
