Now, usually, the reason for a business wanting to target everyone is that they don't want to miss out on any section of the population that might want to buy their brand, but experience shows that we must focus on a primary target audience...

I'd add under #4 that people sometimes buy gifts for others that they wouldn't want to be caught dead with themselves. This is where some metrics go bad - assuming the person who looks at or buys is interested themselves. My sister buys her son-in-law wood-working tools. She is handy around the house, but she's never been into wood-working. Yet she gets unending "reminders" for such tools from the places where she gets her gifts.
