Susan,

I think Number 3 is also a great point though, and one that I live by. I've traditionally shared many tips on blogging and still have people hiring me to do it, because it's just not part of their core business. I think this is how professional blogging, social media or Twitter services are different than coaching or consulting. If you give people advice for free, they are unlikely to pay you for it, but if you give people tips showing how to do something and demonstrating your expertise, people WILL hire you to do it for them because it's just too complicated or time consuming or both to do it for themselves.

Shawn,

You make a good point and I think the advice versus tips is like telling people what they should do versus what they can do. There is difference in tonality and helpfulness if that makes sense.

I think we are getting a little caught up with thinking we have to always provide something free to gain any customers. Number one is a good reminder.

It also depends on your market, customers and working out will the free element actually move the customer along to purchase or at least find out about your proucts or services. Otherwise it is just another cost to a business.
