A great recent article from The Economist looks at the return of the big business model and the ecosystem between larger and smaller businesses. The thrust of the article, perhaps surprisingly, is that the most successful economies contain a mix of big and smaller businesses working side by side. In recent years, the article argues, an increasing number of factors have made some industries more friendly to bigger business again. Some of the article's conclusions must be placed in perspective considering Yahoo! is described here as a small business (though it certainly may be in relation to companies the size of Boeing.) Certainly some small businesses grow to become big ones and some big businesses have paved the way for entrepreneurs. But there is bound to be contention over the article's assessment that troubles with subcontractors have led to an emphasis on bigger business as well as its characterization of Enron as anything less than a big business simply because it was a startup.
