I couldn't agree more, just placing a box for a visitor's email address to subscribe is not enough--never has been, really. I also believe you should offer quality content on your home/squeeze page to keep visitors intrigued. It only takes a small effort but it's worth it.

Good tips. The one thing I do wonder about the pop ups is that people say they do increase subscriptions, but I never see any mention of those that opt in that way actually buy anything and how many unsubscribe.

Done correctly, yeah. I probably won't use pop-ups for fear of alienating users. Hardly a day goes by that I don't close my browser due to being take "captive." But, I have plenty of work to do in the area email marketing, something I've neglected too long.

Great advice!

Regarding the pop-ups, though: I have had a few instances of pop-ups that float across the screen, making them "a game" to close; I didn't find it amusing. Secondly, I have had a few instances on otherwise legit business sites where in order to close the pop-up I had to close my browser. That is taking a "captive-audience" to ridiculous new levels.

Done correctly, as you day, pop-ups work. Done incorrectly they make me want to stick my boot up someone's #ss!
