If getting people to comment on your blog has been an ongoing problem, you may be interested in this advice specifically aimed at WordPress bloggers from Heather C. Stephens a.k.a. the "clever marketer" about how to give a very clear SEO incentive to those who leave comments on your blog. Heather has even gone so far as to create a badge and recommend that you use it to promote this incentive as a way of encouraging more comments. What is this incentive. I can't help wondering will there be a future post on the effects of turning your blog into a magnet for comment spam?

Ok,so. Follow-up post on the way.

Unfortunately, it is so long that I wont be able to finish it this morning and it may not arrive until Monday.

In the meantime, I will say this. Anyone who does remove nofollow from their comments needs to look not just at the quality of the comment but at the site that is linked to, so they need to plan on doing more moderation.

Once again, Alastair, I think it all comes down to comment moderation. I certainly wouldn't recommend this strategy for anyone who doesn't plan to monitor their comments carefully. As for the SEO impact, perhaps you could answer that question better than I. Would be interested in your thoughts. Maybe a followup post?

thanks for sharing this Shawn. I'm a bit brain dead at the moment, but i know the SEO guys could add some value here about no-follow vs do-follow and what it means to Google. Google spread the use of No Follow, right?

I don't know if there's an absolute standard for it, TJ, and probably only Google knows what they actually think about it. Many social media platforms include some areas of their site that are one way and some that are another. And I guess it could be argued that allowing it on your blog could promote spam. Then again, with the rise of comment approval, one could also argue commenters have every bit the level of approval from the blogger has if he/she had created a hyperlink in his/her own post aimed at their Website.
