Good reminders Sarah and I am still surprised that people suggest separate blogs or even just start up with FaceBook and forget having a blog as part of the website.

To me it is like having a section of a retail store down the road instead of being part of the main store.

It is a bit surpring. There seem to be a few issues that lead people to separate blogs from a main site. Sometimes they feel they can be more free in their tone in a way they don't see as appropriate on a corporate domain. Sometimes they just find the blogging platform or Facebook easier to update and understand than their site. I think for a while blog.blanketyblank.com just looked cool to people.

There are actually potentially valid tactical SEO reasons for doing it at times too (although more often not).

In the vast majority of cases though, the advice in the article is spot on. The blog is the main engine of interesting and link worthy content on most business sites in particular and if there are links and social mentions to be gained, you want that credit going to your main site.

I agree, Yoni. I find a lot of SMEs and people new to blogging get caught up in the blogging software and forget about one of the best reasons to blog - to increase the traffic to your business website.
