As you read this, there are meetings occurring in Cartagena, Columbia that could shape the future of how businesses are identified on the web – specifically the kinds of domain names that are allowed to be registered.

Since the origin of the web, domains names have been led by the top three – .COM, .NET and .ORG (or CNO in short) followed by several niche extensions such as .BIZ or .INFO. .COM has led the pack as the domain of first choice with others usually being acquired if the .COM is not available. So it’s become common to assume that any business is likely to be found at .COM. This ubiquity is possible only because the domain extensions – known as Generic Top-Level-Domains (gTLDs) – are effectively a closed set.y
