How many times have you opened your door or answered your phone to a salesperson eager to make their sale? It wouldn't surprise me if many of you said 'loads' but have a negative story to tell.

Hi Tori, I started my sales career as a door to door insurance salesperson. Looking back I regard the experience as some of the best real life sales training I have ever received in that it taught me how to deal with rejection and how to work hard at selling. One point I would add about cold-calling is that more often the prospect is already negative to the experience & will be defensive when approached, therefore it's critical that the salesperson is able to manage the situation in terms of the first impression that they create and not to sound salesy.

The ol' "foot-in-the-door" bit, huh? In some parts of the US he'd have been maced, tazed - or shot as a possible "serial _ _ _" (fill in the blank). Creepy!
