Often in the world of Business we fall into the trap of judging books by their covers.
Let's say Dolph Lundgren, co-star of Rocky IV came to you to apply for a job. "What can that muscular, dumb jock bring to my business?"
How about a 160 I.Q., a Masters Degree in Chemical Engineering and a Fulbright Scholarship to MIT...

Perceptions and stereotypes help us to make some sense of the world- without them we'd be lost. The bigger the person the more he or she is able to hold the stereotype yet allow space for it to be challenged or changed.

This is so true. Who would have thought Susan Boyle is such a good singer given her look/age? Even the pros were shocked.

Susan Boyle is another great example. It was sad, however, to see how unprepared she was emotionally for the success and spotlight that followed. Sometimes we find great talent in unexpected places.

One more point if I might.
Misperception can have devastating effects in marketing and branding.
It's why the message must be delivered well and why damage control is so critical when it's not.

You are correct. Making perceptions valid is important. Fixing things when the message came across wrong is crucial.

Thanks. And Thanks to Mr. Lundgren for providing fodder for the article!

We certainly do sometimes judge according to stereo-type and prejudice. The trick is to look through things and get past the surface and see what is underneath. I was not familiar with how brilliant this guy is!

We do have to get past the covers of books and to the contents. That being said, when I go on my latest foray into a bookstore...quite often...I do tend to choose books based a lot, though not entirely, on the cover!

If you were looking for an example of a book and it's cover, you chose a great example.
Who knew he was more than muscles and brawn.
Very enjoyable and educational!

Hee-hee, yes.
Probably one of the most famous lines of the flick.

Some people seem to have it all. 2 things stuck out for me:
Dolph is 6'5". Did ya know that Sylvester Stallone is really 5'6"? (Seems like a mismatch!)
I had a friend who was very intelligent (he's a lawyer now). In high school he played football. All the sudden he started to act "dumb" because he thought it was expected. I told him to knock-off the dumb act - you're NOT dumb! Quit acting like it! He did, at least in the neighborhood. I suspect he kept it up w/the team for appearance' sake.

Height advantage? No problem. In magazines there's air-brushing. In movies there's camera angles. Always an equalizer. It's all about perception and image!
