Brutal Efficiency. A diabolical plan. Willing workers. Cooperation from Industry.

It WAS a BUSINESS!

Hi, Yoni.

This week PBS is running a "Secrets of the Dead" episode about Rudolf Vrba - a Czech prisoner who escaped from Auschwitz in mid-'44 to warn of what was really happening to those who were sent off by the trainload. It was re-enacted in B+W. Hair-raising!

Duncan,

Thanks for the heads-up. We don't have PBS here but it'll end up on YouTube and I'll check it out.

As far as industrial terms, that's what makes it so frightening; the planning and precision with which it was carried out.

And then Rwanda: so lo-tech. Only swords and machetes for the most part...800,000 killed in 100 days. And they had theor own goebbels-type propoganda minister, a high-ranking government official who got on the radio each and every day and said "go out and murder your neighbor, for even though he is your neighbor and countryman, he is a leech and a rat and why you live in poverty." Absolutely boggles the mind.

p.s. They mentioned that a big part of the horror was that this was the 1st genocide carried out in industrial terms.

Thank you very much. It was a difficult subject to tackle, both emotionally and mentally, but I'm glad I wrote it.

David L.,

Firstly, thank you for your kind message inviting me to stay here and brush off the bad feelings I had. I got quite a few. I accept. They say you dont really find friends via Social Media. You are a pal.

Secondly, and on a lighter note, in the movie "Canadian Bacon" which I'm sure you are familiar with, a devastating war is on the brink with the EVIL Canadians. It could be millions of dead on both sides of the border. It's Bud B. Boomer to the rescue.

As for the punch in the face, it's happened in Bosnia, Rwanda, Cambodia and now in Darfur. Why as humans do we say "never again" and then let it happen again, and why do we rely on the impotent UN for guidance (sorry to any employees of the impotent UN who may be offended by this opinion).

Good. Very good! Had you submitted this it would have been published. You have to decide what is good for a blog and what is good for the newspaper. It's the difference between website hits and $100.

Cash money??? Yeah, I thought of submitting it, but it's too short and I didn't want to work or think harder and I only thought of the topic yesterday. Thanks though!

Sorry, That sounded way too serious. Your choice, but with a few changes it would have been a perfect piece. Jealousy.

Sorry,

I missed your comment yesterday IL. I'm glad it was found to be of interest on the site. As Ben pointed out a few weeks back, business blogs seem to "tank" on the site. Maybe the timing of the date made it relevant.

Yonatan,

Hitler is gone now Bin Laden is gone! Good always triumph's over evil. Great post and I agree the uniform is you and you look very focused. What gun are you holding if you don't mind me asking.

Shep,

Agreed on good and evil.

It's an Israeli Military Industries Micro-Galil. It replaced the short-barrel M-16 and Magal in the IP back on '04.

Yoni,

You do look handsome as heck in a uniform. This article was very deep in looking at how the holocaust was carried out as a business. It is amazing to me all of the components that you demonstrate. I read on article years back about BMW and slave labour. It was also a Michael Moore film part too I think. It is insane how it all happened and kind of too painful to think about.

Thank you. I've googled Michael Moore and BMW. This is what I came up with:

Duncan,

Thanks! Your words mean a lot!

And to those who said it could never happen again, three words: Cambodia, Bosnia and Rwanda.

In Rwanda, the speed was even faster: 800,000 people in 100 days, killed mostly by machetes.

A tragic but necessary reminder, Yoni.

Maybe 4 years ago I saw a rerun of a 6-hour documentary on PBS about Auschwitz. What happened is so far beyond horrifying that it seems almost impossible to realize that we tend to forget over time the horrors we experienced learning this in school. This must never be softened by the clouds of distant memory. The horror seen afresh is all it should take. I think documentaries are more powerful than Hollywood movies on this - the reality.

Yes, it is easy to forget. But history has a way of coming back and punching us in the face, which is one reason why so many people are trying to make sure that we do not forget.
