A good example that comes to mind is Richard Branson. He often describes himself as being timid and shy as a young entrepreneur, something he had to overcome in order to reach the success he has achieved.
I've read interviews where he mentions how terrified he was of public appearances and especially of public speaking and how he had to learn to motivate himself instead of relying on external factors and that is what got him over his fear.
In short, the bad habit was relying on others to motivate you and he replaced it with self-reliance.
