Sometimes the difference between success and failure, in the business world, is a simple tweaking of the presentation. Tweaking of the communication skills. This is where soft skills (i.e. people skills) are essential.

These are excellent skills that unfortuntaely a lot of people simply do not have. I've found that when the topic is controversial or just has too many variables, that the best thing to do is to get on voice and talk it out. Email and text messages simply don't convey tone and too many questions are left unanswered in an email.

All the best,

Deborah: Could you list some more business leaders who are using soft skill in their daily activities?

Hi Martin. I apologize for how long you have had to wait. I just realized that there were comments here. An opportunity to learn :)

Technically speaking, everyone has soft skills, but that doesn't mean that everyone has a high level of soft skills or that they effectively use their soft skills. Go ahead and pick a leader who really inspires you. The fact that that leader is able to inspire you and move you demonstrates that that person has, and is using, their soft skills. An example would be Martin Luther King, Jr. He was an effective preacher and an effective civil rights leader, in part, because of his excellent soft skills. If he had had the same believes but he was not able to articulate what his vision was, to the people of his time, then that would have been an example of not having the soft skills needed to get the message through to the people. We are fortunate, today, that Martin Luther King, Jr. is an example of someone who excelled in the area of soft skills and he was able to combine that with his vision to make a difference in the world.

Hi Deborah,

There's often so much focus on technical skills. Could we define soft skills for the BizSugar community? And how do you go about acquiring them?

The "technical" definition of soft skills is EQ (emotional intelligence quotient). That is a really geeky definition, so it is easier to think of it as the people skills, your ability to communicate and to relate to other people. It includes language skills, leadership skills, interpersonal skills, as well as other aspects of your personality. In the same way that everyone has intelligence, everyone has soft skills. The question at that point is how high is their EQ, or how effective they are with their soft skills.
