Do Startups Have to Start in Big Cities?

Location, location, location — it’s the only thing that matters in real estate and there are days where it seems like it’s the only thing that matters for startups. If you’re located in San Francisco, it seems like it’s always easier to get access to everything from mentorship to funding. Most big cities can get you some of the opportunities that you need to be able to launch, even if they don’t offer the all-in-one appeal of San Francisco.

But what if you don’t have access to a big city?

Hi Thursday,

Not to disagree with Becky or anything, but it really depends on the kind of business you are trying to start. I would say starting a five star restaurant with expensive fair in a town with 1,000 people where the median income is $30,000 would be as difficult as starting a cattle ranch in the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Online businesses, of course, can be started just about anywhere given the right technology and talent.
