Alastair,

A bit surprising to me with the downturn in the economy and the costliness, in terms of taxes and rental space. I would think a trend would be to broaden markets into smaller locales and test the waters there.

Yeah. I think the data is probably quite tech startup focussed which is going to affect it a lot. I suppose most people start up wherever they are. If you do choose where to locate your startup, where the money is might be an issue and also where the skilled labour pool is. With tech companies looking for Angel funding that's going to explain a lot of the cities on this list.
