Hi Shawn, thanks for the comment and I'm happy you enjoyed the guide. There's been quite a bit of debate in the marketing and SEO communities over the potential ranking influence of +1s, shares and other social signals. Moz and Searchmetrics released correlation studies this year that showed high ranking typically have more +1's and other social shares. Both Moz and Searchmetrics were very transparent that both studies were correlation, not causation studies. To me it makes sense that there is a correlation between great content and a high number of shares. I believe +1s, shares and other social signals indirectly contribute to better performance in organic search by increasing the visibility of the article which may lead to an increase in inbound links which could contribute to higher search rankings. My experience is that Google+ is a fantastic social network and a great relationship building tool. While I haven't noticed a direct correlation with articles I've published that received high engagement on the network, the sharing does increase the visibility of the post on the network which leads to more relationship building opportunities. The largest opportunity I see on Google+ for higher search rankings is with personalized search. The more relationships you build and the more users that have you in circles will increase the chances of your posts showing up in their logged-in search results."
Thanks Tcamba, I'm glad the post resonated! You make a great point, that not everyone has migrated to the network. While your target audience may not currently be on Google Plus, I'd recommend beating them to the punch so you're there waiting when they arrive. Establishing a strong social footprint on the network, will significantly influence visibility for brands and personal uses alike in Google's organic results."
