Lots of great points made in the article & internal comments (including your excellent comment). The author is playing "Devil's Advocate" and has some points As Far As Lip Service Goes, but the worry is the underlying "monsters" in people's subconscious that may let them dismiss qualified applicants w/o realizing what's really behind it. (If it's conscious, it's totally unethical - and criminal). It's a slippery slope when diversity is dismissed out of hand - the reasons behind it will be forgotten, and good people will lose out for the "old" reasons once again.
