There are a wide range of promotional products, yes we know, some can appear gimmicky, but others can present a real value to the receiver. The best gifts are gifts that are practical and can be used. Think flash drives, stylus pens, drinkware, calendars, etc. These are great ideas because there is real value and practicality behind each of these items. Also, if you are looking to tone down the advertising, pay special attention to your logo placement and sizing. You can tone down colors and the size of your logo so that it is not so in their face. If you are taking the time to offer gifts, do your research. Think about what they can use.

Good luck!

Hi Susan and Allison,

Great tips but...how do you decide, when you're selecting that gift, whether it is really a gift or something that will be perceived by your clients or customers as yet another attempt to market to them in the guise of giving back. I'm sure many have seen these moves go very right, but also terribly wrong sending the wrong kind of message to your valued customers. I'd love if either or both of you could share some tips for deciding in the comment section of BizSugar for the benefit of all our members.

Heather, I'll let Allison respond on the blog directly but I'm with you: if it's cheap or something over-promotional, it can send the wrong message. I'd go for something tasteful. For example, for Egg, I sent wooden eggs with a handmade stamp (I didn't make it!) of my logo sitting in a nest. Very unique, and people loved them.
