Google pulled the plug on Google Authorship. It was hard to implement, not widely understood or adopted. Doesn’t that make sense?

Maybe it was my good luck that I didn't spend a lot of time to try to learn about authorship?! ;) Joking aside, why did Google pull the plug? Was the authorship competing with ad space?
