You're right about that. Not every customer has complex demands or big problems. Still, I think it's important to differentiate between a "want" and a "need". People will be more receptive to a marketing and sales message when they need something. It's much harder to get someone to invest in a "nice to have" product or service.

One point I would add is to remember sometimes customers just have simple needs that they want a solution to and there is actually no real pain attached to it. This of course depends on the product or service you sell and the customer.
