I think it's a mistake to think about branding as simply distinctiveness. You can stand out in a bad way too. Personal branding should be about showcasing authentic attributes that are appealing to customers or employers. So it's neither about creating a falsely positive impression nor is it about being different. It's about being different in a way your customer finds appealing.
