If you’re a smart website owner you know the importance of links. Inbound links to your website from relevant sources pass on a “trust factor” to the search engines. I look at it this way: there's just more strength and influence with numbers. The relevant, authority sites I can associate myself with, the better.

I totally agree! I link to relevant, authority websites partly because I think they are useful (and want to give credit to them) and partly because doing so boost my site's and my outbound links' credibility in search engines.

Either way, linking out is actually a good thing if you, like Nick said, don't go overboard.
