In 2006, the National Federation of the Blind filed a lawsuit against Target for violating federal and state laws that require that business and government services be equally available for the disabled. Target settled the suit in 2008 to the tune of $6 million. For a company the size of Target, $6 million may seem like a drop in the bucket. But the suit is a clear precedent: if your website is not easily accessible to users relying on tools like screen-reader software, you can face big problems.
