Hey Lyceum, we use retargeting in both social and PPC campaigns with a high rate of success. I think for most people that they don't think twice about why they are seeing ads for a specific brand after they visit a site, but the fact that they are definitely helps them come back to make a purchase. Unlike pop up ads, I feel like retargeting is more passive - less obtrusive so that there isn't necessarily a negative association.
