Amen! I'm a big fan of the concept behind permission marketing as well and this ain't it! Actually, it's interesting because a big part of the current Facebook controversy has to do with this very idea. When I sign up for Facebook and begin sharing information, do I really know this information will be used to market to me? On the other hand, what kind of marketing is it? Just the showing of relevant ads on my Facebook profile and those of my friends? Or is it something more? In the example you gave, a simple solution would have been to ask customers to sign a card. Check one box if you just want your picture. Check another if you'd like to receive more info on who we are and what we do.
