Keyword research should be the foundation. You can be the best writer in the world, but if you don't spend time understanding what your audience is looking for and specifically how they search for and find it, you will have a hard time getting people to find and read that great content!

Yes, keyword selection is amazingly important. Yes - people often rush by it not understanding the importance. Do PPC first to figure out what keywords actually work for your business. This may take 3-6 months. Yes, most people are not patient enough. But if you are going to spend 2 years trying to rank on those organic terms, you want to be sure they are correct and have some leads coming in the mean time.
