Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), or, drones, as they are more commonly called, have been a source of considerable controversy since it became known that the U.S. military was using them for a variety of battlefield purposes. These aircraft are not terribly dissimilar to very expensive model airplanes, except they require no on-board pilot. Therefore, they are perfect for strikes in dangerous territory, allowing a pilot to stay behind and guide the craft from the safety of base. While the U.S. military has been a champion of this technology, detractors have voiced their concerns over the purpose of these unmanned aircraft and the legalities behind some of their operations.
