Unfortunately, in a world of infinite competition and variety, this is a dead on analysis. It's true that business is about building relationships and perhaps the idea of your customers not caring about you or your company runs against this grain. But another way of looking at it is that, they don't care to make or maintain relationships with businesses who do not consistently produce value for them. Why? Because there are other more profitable relationships for them out there. End of story!
