Leaders who are willing to speak the hard truth understand that people grow when they are challenged. Raising the bar and calling people to the carpet is not a bad thing: it is part of being a good leader. Sure, there is a balance. You don’t want to belittle people by constantly pointing out their weaknesses. Being a leader means that you encourage people to grow. This takes a good mix of speaking the truth, then grabbing their hands and pulling them up off the carpet so that they can learn from their mistakes.
