Hi, folks. Put this together as kind of a more in depth exploration of how you go about creating real community on BizSugar or any other social media site you might participate in whether large or small. Thankfully, there are many others among our regular users here at BizSugar who are equally adept at building community through social media so I thought it would be great if everyone could pitch in with some suggestions as I'm sure there are things that could be added here. Besides, getting others' input is what social media is all about, right? Thanks, in advance, for your contributions! You can comment here or on the blog post by following the link.

I think this will be my last day voting on Biz Sugar. This place needs a pep rally or something. I saw a community being built for a while. All I see from watching now is people out for themselves and voting on group lines. I'm serious about the pep rally. If it happens, e mail me and I'll come back and vote.

Great article. The point about a blue print is one I think a lot of people miss. There is also a lot of automation going on, which will not help you build and effective community.

Great posts, it can be hard building a community, but the payoff is well worth it.

Shawn,

Great points. People also need to remember that building community takes time so don't get involved if you can't commit the time.

Thanks for the comments, Yoni and Rivkah. I'd have to say that there remain many people who are seeking to learn more about social media everyday, as they are seeking to learn more about every aspect of running their business. When I first began experimenting with social media, I made many of the errors I'm warning against in this article out of sheer ignorance. Through a combination of experience and of reading helpful articles by others, I gradually learned more and more. Will there be those who ignore my and others' experience? Certainly. I've probably done the same, sometimes unknowingly, in my own career. But this post really was inspired by a person who e-mailed me for some suggestions about how to become more effective in social media. So obviously, there are those who want to learn more.

Shawn,

Great article, but it also makes me a bit sad. The people who read this and affirm it will be those who are already interested in/active in building a community. Those who are not interested (the so-called hit-and-run submitters of David L.'s article) will probably never even bother to read something like this. A conundrum :(

Shawn,

Excellent article!!! This should be an opening chapter in a textbook for building a biz-related social media site!
