On Twitter and MySpace, many young people follow hundreds of friends before age twenty, all without ever having said or heard a word from most of them. Top Facebook users proudly proclaim their “whale” status, with 5,000 friends or more.

They did a great disservice to mankind when they called it "friending". Maybe instead of "friend" they could have used "ppl" - or just used the number sign - which is what it really is if you don't know them otherwise.
