The most successful entrepreneurs and executives I have seen are savvy business people first, and experts in their field second. This may seem counter-intuitive to technologists, especially in an era when technology seems to be driving the world. Yet the sad truth is that a technology not focused on a real problem is not a business, and will probably fail in the marketplace.

Really great post Martin! A technologist who is also a savvy business person is a potent and usually very successful combination.

Martin, this is really great advice! How many MIT graduates with the latest technological development take the same amount of time to develop their business model?...or even hire/partner with the right person to do so? The only thing is, when I think "big picture" I'm not automatically equating that with business planning only...I'm thinking that there is also a big picture in the IT part. The fact is, though, that both IT and business people alike get lost in the details without looking at the overall picture. In that sense, totally agree. Great post!
