AnnMarie - Interesting idea. Apple has followed this strategy for some time by cornering key components such as LCD glass and memory for their iPod and iPhone devices.

I would caution that unless you are willing to commit large amount you may not be successful in implementing this strategy. the supplier will want a very large commitment from you to keep you as sole customer. Also, with large number of suppliers available on a global scale it is becoming increasingly difficult to corner a market.
