Hit-and-run Social Bookmarking
"You mean it's not just me? @alinisrael hat gotten me thinking about some kind of throttle to at least better balance submissions and votes/comments. You cannot force community, but you can force people to slow down just enough that some (not all) will participate just a little more."Hit-and-run Social Bookmarking
"I agree. There are two main things that cause me to stop as I skim through submissions that are often mostly spam: the submitter's familiar avatar and a title that are of interest. Either of those gets me to stop and pay attention. If it's a friend that submitted something boring or a known hit-and-run submitter with something awesome, I get all conflicted inside and am forced to each chocolate covered almonds. Fortunately, that doesn't happen too much. :-)"FOXNews.com - Crazy, Bizarre, Freaky and Offensive Vintage Ads: What Were They (We) Thinking?
"Shawn, you make a superb point. In fact, the same point, more or less, that has been made about advertising awards, which have typically been judged on a somewhat subjective "creativity" basis and not on their actual effectiveness."If I Had a Million Followers, I’d Be (Fill in the Blank)
"I would do nothing differently. There are a few people that are important to have follow me so that I can DM them. Otherwise, it's just a crowd. Surely a million people would help me better spread my message and share my content, but I don't think I would do anything differently."How Google's Caffeine update will impact your business
"For some time now, I have been recommending that any website in an even moderately competitive niche should have a blog. Caffeine gives one more reason. The caffeine process itself is about indexing, not ranking, so Caffeine does not necessarily mean that having regularly updated content is more important for rankings now than it was a few weeks ago. But it does show where Google's attention is focused, and therefore it is a fairly safe bet to assume that freshness of content will also play a larger role in a domain's overall credibility. However, it's not enough to just have regularly refreshed content; that content needs to be seen as worhtwhile. Signals such as tweets and Facebook likes, such as social bookmarking and such as comments on the posts are also important. "Subscribe

"Actually, there used to be a rule like that at a couple of the Spanish social bookmarking websites (maybe still is). I think http://www.meneame.net/ and http://www.enchilame.com/ were among them. You had to vote for a certain number of submissions before you could post. After a period of inactivity (weeks? months?), the restriction would be reinstated on your account. What that did was a) make it a pain for spammers to just drop a link, and b) made people think about the voting part, not just the submission part. The weak aspect of such rules is that there is no way to make people read the articles. Or even the descriptions. Or even the titles."
