Hi Lyceum, thanks for the welcome! I've been railing against this for years! The amount of times I've either presented a talk or a proposal to be confronted with "...but I notice you didn't mention (INSERT IRRELEVANT FAD HERE) and I hear that's big at the moment" with precisely no consideration about whether it's (a) relevant or, worse, (b) exists as a thing...! The construction of imaginary groups was almost justifiable in the long-distant past but now we have so much data, no marketer or business should be relying on groups that have no 'golden thread' - and a group of people born within the same decade or decade and a half has no golden thread!
