I am calling social media for "conversational marketing" sometime in order to explain the interactive part of new media, compared with the general traditional mainstream media with op-eds as the highest form of interaction between the content creator and the reader.

I have now learned about reticular formation thanks to the post and Wikipedia! ;)

Your advice is similar to that given by many others on the subject of social media, especially the caution to ignore numbers when it comes to followers or fans. What is important is engagement. Small engaged communities are better than large indifferent ones. I suspect most are somewhere in the middle with a small percentage of highly engaged followers as a part of a larger whole.
