Just like for your life, your business needs a plan. And no, you can't have a plan for your business without a plan for your life. Owning your own business is too intertwined with your personal life not to have them both aligned. The importance of having a plan is not so much that you actually follow it, it's that you have at least thought about what you want your business to look like and a rough sketch on how to get there.

Fantastic characterization of a business plan as the "roadmap" for your business. This is a far less static way of looking at a plan as the guide to a journey rather than something set in stone.
