The difficult to get along with person conveys someone who is in control and a (unfortunately ) as someone who possesses leadership qualities. (Incidentally, if those "candidates" had been women, I think the researchers would have gotten different results).
And as you mentioned, by associating those office hours with you and your business, you convey that you are not desparate for work. The assumption is that you are being kept busy and crowds always attract even more people.
