Taking One For The Team: 6 Tips On Developing Personal Accountability
"When I think of an employee declining tasks, admitting mistakes and asking for help, it's usually not a manager. Gauging time and abilities and using some tact is required to pull it off professionally. Sometimes rather than saying "No", just saying yes to doing "less" will gain you more favor with your peers. Nice information, I enjoyed it. Thanks. "Does Your Leadership Have Legitimacy?
"Ian, You did an excellent job with this post. I also enjoy reading and reviewing research articles. I was really thrilled to see someone discussing Malcolm Gladwell. The tie in with worker disengagement makes a lot of sense. Think of a worker who is totally devoted to work hard all day for $X, then he finds out someone he feels is lazy is make $2X. Now we're likely to see his behavior change rapidly. How fairly the employee views the workplace, the leadership, the rules...it all factors into how "legitimate" he sees things. I look forward to your next post. "4 Reasons Weak Managers Got Their Jobs

"Excellent points. It's a shame that many of these quiet professionals are often overshadowed by their louder counterparts and overlooked by their superiors. As business leaders, it is important to recognize the contributions of the more introverted people in the organization. They may be incubating some great ideas that aren't being heard. "MicroMessaging: Management Communication
"Heather, I feel some people are going to be naturally better at these types of communication than others, but people can learn to improve. I am often in situations where I am listening to people talk for long periods of time. I have to be really conscious of my expressions and responses in order to get the information I need. So to answer your question, yes, I think managers can learn these techniques to improve their communication. Shawn, I like your approach here. I listen to a lot of grievances myself and have found that over time, you see the pattern that leads you to the problem. It’s good you can modify your leadership style based on the situation or person your facing. If you’re getting rid of 95% of the issues, it sounds like you’ve made yourself a problem solver. I’m going to write on this subject in the next week or so. Thanks for the comment! "Subscribe

"Great post. It is so important for people to realize that they are only successful as leaders when they have ensured their people can succeed without them."
