Social media is a place where people come together and attempt to create order. Memories, protests, bewilderment — all of these, we try to organize. Sometimes we organize names into lists or stories into articles.
Sometimes we just try to organize our thoughts. Social media has become a major platform for discussion about social injustice across the globe. #HandsUpDontShoot, #iguala, #ICantBreathe, #YesAllWomen, #BringBackOurGirls and #ArabSpring are some of the high-profile hashtags that have come out of the dialogue. They can be read as poignant requests: imperatives with few words and many implications. All of these are reminders we cannot stop talking about race, religion and humanity. Social media is one place to continue the conversation.
