Hi Mike! I never saw anyone at any weight move the way he did in his pre-sanction career - and he was 6'3" 200-210#. The defense was beyond anything seen so far, but you're right - the really cool part was the way he could punch from any angle, circling either direction. His hands were so fast a lot of times it's hard to even see the "two" of the "one-two" - it's a nanosecond later. How many "lead rights" did he land - or how many didn't land (a very small number). The opponent got dizzy just watching him literally run rings around them. Poetry in motion, especially when they do a slo-mo, and you can see all the subtlety & grace. Offense, defense, and total psychological domination - in his early 20's, yet.

There was no one else like him at the time. He wasn't the hardest hitter but the the sheer volume of the punches...plus having to chase him around the ring...was enough to wear down any fighter.

Absolutely! And as a boxing buff, he was not only great at defense but also at offense. It one's thing to duck or take a punch well...its another to smack the guy in the mouth :)

It's a wonderful idea if you're really great at defense - like Ali, for example. I believe Charles "Sonny" Liston & George Foreman can attest to his great defense (Liston), and his total psychological domination (young Foreman, who was reeling from the 1st punch of the fight - landed by Ali). Both these guys were terrors - the Tysons of their day, but Ali called their bluff. As trainer Angelo Dundee said, the way to control a bully is to immediately show them who's boss - don't let them dictate the action.
