Do Not Stand Alone: Workplace Bullying
"Wonderful insights, Catherine - I can't wait for parts 2 & 3. Lots of aspects to comment on in part 1, but the last part reminded me of a sad situation at a restaurant I worked at years ago. A short man of Hawaiian/Japanese descent was a talented cook. His nickname went from "Gringo" (because he supposedly looked Mexican), to "Ga-da-ding", to "Little Ding". I once asked him if it bothered him, and his reply is what was sad - he said no, he was used to it, and he figured they liked him but just teased him for fun. It was like he enjoyed being the Tar Baby. They Did like him, but he never stood up. Duncan"An Awesome Business Resource I Just Found: The Workplace Bullying Institute
"Hi Rochelle. I worked at a small community hospital in NE Ohio from '00-'08. Maybe in '06 HR passed out more stuff for everyone to sign off on (including not using a tornado as a flimsy excuse not to drive in to work). One was about any employee, VP/director/manager/supervisor, or medical staff member humiliating any other employee for any reason. Everyone including the attending physicians (who are not employees at all, but had privileges) had to sign-off on it. But the reality was that it would only be enforced on the lower levels. There was no way a VP or physician was going to be held accountable for going off on a lower level employee. After we were taken over by a giant local hospital group, the whole HR manual was set up that way. I read up to page *2*, when it was plainly stated that the hospital reserved the right to decide how & when (and with whom) to enforce all the rules we signed-off on. I stopped reading there (though I'd read all of the previous management's manual) - what's the point: just sign-off and wait to see what whims they follow as they decide issues that come up. If they like you, you get special treatment, if not - no. Duncan"Staying Connected With Customers Through Mobile Technology
"Hi Karen. Apparently, some people were singing in the shower when the news flash went out that both fax & voice-mail are "out", and e-mail & text-messaging are "in" - for the reasons you so ably stated. (It's not the '90's anymore, no matter how recent that may seem to some of us older folks.) Duncan"Don’t Be SEO Penny Wise, Pound Foolish
"Hi Nick. For $50 a month, outsourcing is asking too much. I'll bet they use a bunch of cheap-ass bots to auto-blog, auto-spin, auto-submit, auto-link, auto-follow, and auto-comment. All they gotta do is push half-a-dozen buttons once, and then it's auto-scheduled for the month. They're Over-Paid! Duncan"Do or Die Marketing Plan: Who Do You Think You're Talking To?
"Wonderful, Paula. I'd add under #4 that people sometimes buy gifts for others that they wouldn't want to be caught dead with themselves. This is where some metrics go bad - assuming the person who looks at or buys is interested themselves. My sister buys her son-in-law wood-working tools. She is handy around the house, but she's never been into wood-working. Yet she gets unending "reminders" for such tools from the places where she gets her gifts. CRM gome bad? Duncan"Subscribe
