Taking a half-step back probably IS the reason a lot of people fail at whatever they attempt, but in music - especially in the days when high$$$ record labels controlled access 100% (before the web) - it was the industry execs choking off all creativity: "Sound like so-&-so in the top 40, or forget music". Few took the hard road of less money, less fame, etc, to make the music they had inside them.
